The “Project Oxygen 4.0” initiative by the Give Bangladesh Foundation (GBF) has planted 50,000 trees in Dumuria, Khulna on Saturday, and launched a Climate Graduation Program to raise awareness about afforestation and climate change in vulnerable regions.

The project, with the motto “Shokto Kori Bangladesh, focused on enhancing coastal resilience by choosing tree species that maximise oxygen production and carbon absorption. The trees were planted on 14.63 hectares along riverbanks and roadsides.

Workshops were also conducted to create “Climate Champions” through evaluations and knowledge sharing. Local religious leaders were also involved with the initiative, actively playing a leading role in creating a climate-conscious community.

Key partners included the Water Development Board and a group of students from Khulna University who conducted impact assessments. KK Foundation and Optrium contributed financially, and Sonamukh Paribar was the implementation partner.

Moreover, under the initiative’s Climate Graduation Program, efforts will be made to create long-term awareness among the more than 600 local youth through regular workshops, assessments and field visits over the next three months.

The primary objective of Project Oxygen is to empower marginalised communities by creating awareness about environmental protection and strengthening the coastline against future natural disasters through planned afforestation.

Project oxygen 4.0 empowering the coast with tree plantation and climate awareness

Source: tbsnews

The successful execution of ‘Project Oxygen 4.0’ by Give Bangladesh Foundation (GBF) in Dumuria, Khulna, under the motto ‘Shokto Kori Bangladesh ‘, has brought a sense of pride and accomplishment.

This initiative, aimed at restoring and rejuvenating the coastal greenery, has resulted in the planting of 50,000 trees, a significant step towards our environmental goals.

The plantation part of the project was implemented in three phases- collecting seeds from the Sundarbans, growing saplings, and finally planting them in designated areas of Dumuria. Emphasising tree planting and climate awareness, the initiative included a “Climate Graduation Program” to educate the youth community on the necessity of afforestation in climate-vulnerable regions. For the next three months, efforts will be made to create long-term awareness among the 600+ local youth of four institutions through regular workshops, assessments and field visits. Workshops were conducted to develop “Climate Champions” through evaluations and knowledge sharing. Local religious leaders were actively engaged in playing a leading role in creating a climate-conscious community.

Suitable tree species were selected to enhance coastal resilience for maximum oxygen production and carbon absorption. Species like Gewa, Sundari, Golpata, Keora, Goran, Kakara, Pashur, Arjun, Neem, Bahera, Arjun and Haritaki were planted on 14.63 hectares along river banks and roadsides. Key partners included the Water Development Board (BWDB), which donated 17km of land, and a group of Khulna University students conducting impact assessments. KK Foundation and Optrium contributed financially, and Sonamukh Paribar was the implementation partner. Volunteers of Give Bangladesh Foundation ran a social media-based public crowdfunding initiative as “1 tree for 15 taka” through voluntary participation.

The Climate Graduation Program united local youth, with collaboration from several educational institutions, including Baniakhali High School (200 students), GKSK Ideal High School (150), Super Senpara Baharul Ulum Dakhil Madrasa (150), and Sharafpur Darul Quran Madrasa (150). The programme engages these 600 students across 60 teams, providing certificates and adding them to the institutional framework along with regular supervision and monitoring of trees to encourage climate awareness.

The primary objective of Project Oxygen is to empower marginalised communities by raising awareness about environmental protection and strengthening the coastline against future natural disasters through planned afforestation. The project aims to foster a culture of tree planting and maintenance within the local community, with residents handed over the responsibility for tree care. About 7,000 people from eight villages will directly benefit from this initiative.

Project Oxygen was first launched as part of emergency response in 2020, planting 49,000 trees in 49 minutes in Khulna’s Koyra to combat natural disasters. In 2021, Project Oxygen 2.0 planted 1600 saplings in Dumuria, followed by 3000 saplings in Shyamnagar, Satkhira, under Project Oxygen 3.0 in 2023.

The Give Bangladesh Foundation was established in 2018 to provide opportunities for individuals and organisations to participate in national development through charity and volunteerism.

In addition to emergency responses, GBF operates five curated development projects: Project Ombu addresses access to safe drinking water; Project Folon focuses on ensuring capital security and agricultural training for farmers; Project Pothchola supports the mainstreaming of children of sex workers; Project Konna promotes menstrual health awareness among women and girls; and Project Lorai works towards the economic empowerment of marginalised women.

GBF encourages everyone to initiate positive societal changes by addressing development challenges and welcoming any effort toward transformation.

Project Ombu: Addressing Bangladesh’s water crisis with sustainable solutions

Source: tbsnews

Till date, Project Ombu has helped nearly 32,035 people across the country by providing them with safe drinking water.

Renghinpara, a village four kilometres from Thanchi Sadar in Bandarban, suffers from acute water crisis. There is little to no access to safe drinking water.

“Women go to fetch water three times a day. Moreover, the long queues and a 30-minute long walking distance make it very difficult. Often, when we are late to return from jhum cultivation, it gets difficult to fetch water, and due to limited water sources, many return with empty pitchers,” said Chongkhoy Mro, a local resident.

According to the Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) Report-2022, the proportion of Bangladesh’s population with access to safely managed drinking water (defined by the WHO/UNICEF as an improved water source that is accessible on premises, available when needed and free from faecal and priority chemical contamination) is 59.11%.

In other words, around 40% of the population, or approximately 70 million people, lack access to safe water.
To address this challenge, Give Bangladesh Foundation, a voluntary development organisation, came forward and developed ‘Project Ombu’ (ombu means water in Bangla).

Under the project, an approximately 4,600-feet-long pipeline has been constructed to provide safe water for over 600 people of Renghinpara.
Water is sourced from a stream 3,500 feet above the area. A special filtration system has been installed to remove gravel, leaves, etc from the water.

Three water collection points have been constructed as well — one in the community, one in a hostel area and the other on the school premises. Eight taps have also been installed so that people do not have to wait in long queues.

The organisation collaborated with local construction workers to implement the project and finished it in 14 days. The project cost over Tk4 lakh.

In that particular area in Bandarban, water crisis is also paired with sanitation problems. There was not a single toilet around the school. To help school-going children practise hygiene, Give Bangladesh Foundation has built two toilets on the hostel and school premises.

“In terms of water sources in our area, we only have a fountain. Often the water gets polluted, and children suffer from waterborne diseases such as malaria, typhoid, dysentery, etc,” said Mangchung Mro, an assistant teacher at the Niabut Para Government Primary School.

“Also, during monsoon, we can’t collect water from the fountain. We are forced to harvest rainwater for drinking and cooking. With the pipeline system installed, now we can easily collect water anytime of the year,” he added.

Project Ombu started its journey way back in 2017. That year, Bangladesh experienced one of the most severe floods in its history.
Heavy monsoon rains caused floods across more than one-third of the country. In northern and central parts, they affected millions of people and caused around a thousand schools to be closed.

Give Bangladesh Foundation provided emergency relief services to the flood affected communities. They provided alum (a water purifier chemical compound) to the flood victims but discovered a bigger problem: the water could not really be purified as the sources themselves were damaged.

“When a flood hits, people face a crisis of safe drinking water. Even when the flood ends, the crisis remains. In fact, the aftereffect of a flood is even more dangerous — as it sustains for a couple of months. The water sources get damaged and thus the people suffer,” said Mohammad Saifullah Mithu, the co-founder and president of Give Bangladesh.

They came up with the idea of installing double platform tubewells so that they can survive floods and serve as a water collection point for the community. But the idea did not see the light of day due to fund shortage. Also, it was a relatively new concept to be adopted.
However, they managed to install two tubewells the following year to test the idea.

“We used data of the area’s highest level of flood water in the past to determine the height of the upper platform. Some areas experienced one to two feet of water while some experienced four to five feet. Usually, we raise the platform eight feet from surface level. As we introduced them at public places like local markets or mosques, people could come by boats or rafts to collect water,” he said.
Till date, they have installed 12 double-platform tubewells in Kurigram, Gaibandha, and Sirajganj.

Younus Hasan, a local resident from Belkuchi upazila in Sirajganj, shared with us that the tubewells have indeed been beneficial for their community. They switch to the upper platform ones if the lower one is damaged by a natural disaster.

Project Ombu divided the country into three zones: the flood-prone north, the Chattogram Hill Tracts (CHT) which lack water sources, and the south which has saline water. And they approach each region with a different solution.

In the northern areas, they installed double platform tubewells. In the CHT, they constructed reservoirs, and for the saline water problem in the south, they are currently working on the research and development phase of a solution.

The water crisis in the south is quite different from other regions. There is water, but it is saline water. About 19 districts of this region share the same problem.

Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change. Frequent floods, cyclones, tidal surges etc affect freshwater supplies with deeply entrenched saline intrusions in coastal communities– leading to several health hazards.

The existing solution is Reverse Osmosis machines which basically filter the saline water. These machines are imported from China, India, and the US. But they come with a few concerns.

One, these machines heavily generate wastewater. In fact, 60-70% of water gets wasted while 30-40% is converted into drinkable state. And the other one is these machines have a very high import cost.

A study by two professors of Australia’s Queensland University of Technology (QUT) found that rice hulls can desalinate water. Saifullah said they have developed a model of this desalination technology based on this finding.

E-Lab, a research and development firm, and the QUT have collaborated in this project. As of 2023, E-Lab is conducting comprehensive multi-layer tests to ensure that the solution is reliable as well as efficient.

They expect to implement the project this year, inaugurating the first plant in Khulna’s Koyra upazila. Each plant will be capable of purifying 12,000-15,000 litres of water.

However, in the south, they have installed three solar submersible pumps in Nhila Union of Teknaf near the Rohingya camps to desalinate water.

The left zone of the Dhaka-Teknaf highway has fresh water, thanks to the Naf River, but the right zone has saline water. That’s where the pumps help.

Under Project Ombu, there are nine active volunteers who are mainly university students. A key portion of the organisation’s funding comes through crowdfunding. Another source is partnership with other organisations. For instance, KK Foundation and Aga Khan School have funded them on separate occasions.

Till date, Project Ombu has reached nearly 32,035 people as direct beneficiaries to the solutions it executed.

“Concerned departments of the government, the private sector, NGOs, and non-profits like us have their own share of responsibilities to address this exacerbating water scarcity in Bangladesh. Instead of making half-hearted efforts or raising unclear demands, the utmost priority should be addressing the problems in a specific, sustainable and cost-oriented way. To combat this setback, we must focus on a blended approach- encompassing both innovative technology and a community-inclusive implementation,” Saifullah concluded.

Project Oxygen 3.0: An initiative of Give Bangladesh Foundation in Strengthening the Coast

15th September 2023

Give Bangladesh Foundation (GBF) executed ‘Project Oxygen 3.0,’ an event to plant 3000 trees in Shyamnagar Upazila of Satkhira, a salinity-affected coastal area on Friday, September 15, 2023.

Across 35 different spots, which were mostly public institutions, diverse varieties of salinity-endured trees including Kadbel, Amloki, Debdaru, Lomb, Mehogini, Rongon, Mango, Alokananda, Neem, Sofeda, and Guava were planted. LEDARS, a local NGO of Satkhira was the implementation partner of the event. The event was supported by the Engineer Abul Kalam Trust and KKF.

The program has brought together the two key driving forces for the future and for change, the children and the youths of Bangladesh. Students from Manarat International School and Hermann Gmeiner School & College were actively involved in awareness generation for the event. At the same time, the fundraising efforts were driven by young volunteers from Give Bangladesh Foundation. The on-field part of the event was successfully pulled off with the enormous effort of local youths, who actively engaged themselves in protecting their locality.

8th-grade Hermann Gmeiner student Mafruha Taskin was a Student Ambassador for the event, who raised awareness in peer groups to fight climate change effects. She is immensely proud of the monumental role she played in the backend. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime volunteering experience. So fortunate to be a part of such a lovely initiative at this young age”, she revealed.

Key Accounts Coordinator of GBF, Fariha Ahmed, expressed the resolution of Give Bangladesh Foundation in battling climate change. “Bangladesh needs planned tree-plantation efforts, and coastal areas adjacent to Sunderbans have always been the most prior focus for us”, she remarked.

Co-Founder and president of the organization, Mohammad Saifullah Mithu, thanked the partners of the initiative for joining hands in this impactful campaign. He commented, “The execution of Project Oxygen 3.0 shows that combined forces of like-minded organizations can be harnessed to address development challenges in the most efficient manner”.

The Executive Director of LEDARS, Mohan Kumar Mondal committed to keep working for the underserved Climate-vulnerable people of Satkhira. Sifat-E-Azam, Executive Director of KKF, a key partner of the program, echoed their commitment to continued collaborative efforts to bring positive outcomes for vulnerable communities. Rabiul Islam, Vice-president of Engineer Abul Kalam Trust expressed his elation to join hands in a multi-stake partnership from a family organization.

The trees planted will be owned by local residents as an incentive for them to protect and nurture the greenery in their community. The primary objective of ‘Project Oxygen’ is twofold: to reforest the vulnerable coastal region, fortify it against future natural disasters, and to empower underprivileged locals while safeguarding the environment. By planting thousands of trees, this event strives to fortify these coastal areas, making them more resilient to future natural calamities. Additionally, it combats environmental degradation caused by deforestation and offers fruit-bearing trees to the local population, thereby addressing their nutritional needs.

As a part of the Emergency Response campaign of GBF, Project Oxygen was launched in 2020, when we planted 49,000 trees in 49 minutes commemorating the 49th year of independence in the coastal areas of Koyra upazila, Khulna as a proactive measure against natural disasters. Following the event, through Project Oxygen 2.0, 1600 trees were planted in Dumuria, Khulna in 2021. Through Project Oxygen, Give Bangladesh plans to plant half a million trees in Bangladesh in the next 10 years.

Give Bangladesh Foundation was established in 2018 to provide a unique pathway for the people of Bangladesh, to get involved in the development of the country through philanthropy and volunteering.

Other than the Emergency Response Campaign, the foundation has five curated projects. Project Folon has developed a multi-prong approach to address the issues faced by farmers, with access to capital, agricultural training, development of market access and training on personal finances forming the core pillars of our intervention. Project Pothchola works with the children of sex workers to help them realize their potential and integrate with mainstream society. Project Ombu explores solutions that will ensure adequate availability of drinkable water in the areas of Bangladesh where the water crisis is acute. Project Konna is working to ensure that the women living in the rural areas of Bangladesh are aware of and have access to a safe menstrual hygiene management system. Project Lorai, has begun working with the goal of improving the economic well-being of women from marginalized and deprived communities.

Give Bangladesh Foundation urges every individual and organization to be a representative for change, and is open to any partnership that fosters an impactful initiative.

Spreading the joy of Ramadan among underprivileged communities

Source- The Daily Star

Established in 2018, Give Bangladesh Foundation is a social organisation that provides a pathway for people to get involved in philanthropy and volunteering. By bringing modern practices from the development industry to the more simplistic philanthropic sector, the foundation strives to ensure that charitable contributions from individuals are creating a positive impact on beneficiaries.

During the pandemic, Give Bangladesh launched its Iftar Campaign to assist communities who were stranded due to lockdowns. Their beneficiaries included low-wage workers, destitute children, madrasah personnel, and students. Their Iftar Campaign intended to eradicate starvation among marginalised groups. In 2020, they provided 26,987 iftar packets across five locations. The next year, they served iftar to 18,170 people from 15 districts.

Give Bangladesh, along with Prochesta Foundation, Jhilimili, Madchef, and Kamrunnesa Khatun Foundation, have set out to distribute iftar among 24,000 underpriveledged people from 64 districts this time. They are raising funds through a crowdfunding approach on their social media platforms. People can donate an iftar meal for BDT 70, thereby spreading the happiness of this holy month.

When asked about the challenges they are facing, Abir Hossain, Executive Director, Give Bangladesh Foundation, shared how funding is the major obstacle. “The whole fundraising campaign is based on the spontaneous flow of funds. Due to countrywide financial constraints, the fundraising status is a bit lower than expected. But we are recovering in this regard through activating our near and far connections,” he explained.

Jhilimili, a social organisation formed by students from the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), University of Dhaka (DU), aims to support underprivileged children. Through this collaboration, they distributed iftar among 100 beneficiaries near their campus. They are actively participating in the fundraising, by asking for donations through social media. They are optimistic about reaching their goal soon and look forward to more projects that aid in uplifting underprivileged children.
