FAQ

What is Zakat?

Zakat, meaning "that which purifies," is the Third Pillar of Islam. It is an obligatory annual charitable contribution that purifies your wealth and soul.

Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must possess for a full lunar year before Zakat becomes obligatory. The Nisab is calculated based on the current market value of:

  • 87.48 grams of gold, OR
  • 612.36 grams of silver

Current Nisab value (January 2026): ৳1,99,500 (Source: As-sunnah Foundation)

Zakat is mandatory for all adult Muslims who meet the following conditions:

  • Faith & Maturity: You must be an adult Muslim of sound mind
  • Nisab Threshold: Your wealth must exceed the Nisab level
  • Ownership: You must have complete ownership and control over your wealth

Timeframe: You must have held this wealth for one full lunar year (Hawl)

Once you meet the Nisab threshold, Zakat is calculated at 2.5% on:

  • Cash and savings (in hand or in bank accounts)
  • Gold and silver jewelry and items
  • Shares, stocks, and investments
  • Business inventory and trade goods
  • Properties held specifically for investment purposes]

Zakat is calculated as 2.5% of your total eligible wealth. For accurate calculation based on your current assets and the latest precious metal rates, use our Zakat Calculator.

  • Be a poor Muslim (someone whose property, beyond basic requirements, doesn’t reach the Nisab threshold)
  • Not belong to your immediate family (your spouse, children, parents, and grandparents cannot receive your Zakat, though other relatives can)

Zakat is a mandatory pillar of Islam (2.5% of qualifying wealth) for those who meet the criteria, aimed at purifying wealth and supporting the poor.

Sadaqah is a voluntary act of charity that can be given at any time, in any amount, to anyone, above and beyond the obligatory Zakat.]

Yes, you can pay Zakat on someone else’s behalf, for example, a husband paying for his wife, provided the person on whose behalf it’s being paid authorizes the payment.
