Survey on Bede Community’s MHM Situation: ‘Uncharted Red Waters’ Striving to Create Mentstrual Equity

গিভ বাংলাদেশ ফাউন্ডেশনের চলমান ‘আনচার্টেড রেড ওয়াটার্স’ প্রকল্পের অন্যতম লক্ষ্য– প্রান্তিক নারীদের জন্য মাসিক স্বাস্থ্য সমতা নিশ্চিত করা, যার মাঝে অন্যতম এই বেদে সম্প্রদায়। 

শিক্ষা-স্বাস্থ্যসহ অন্যান্য মৌলিক চাহিদায় পিছিয়ে থাকা এই নারীদের মধ্যে মাসিক স্বাস্থ্য নিয়ে ব্যাপক অসচেতনতা বিদ্যমান। প্রায় ৯৫ শতাংশ বেদে নারীর মাসিক স্বাস্থ্য নিয়ে স্বচ্ছ কোনো ধারনা নেই। ফলে উনারা নানা রকম রোগের সম্মুখীন হচ্ছেন।  

গত ১৫ই নভেম্বর মুন্সিগঞ্জ জেলার সদর, তালতলা এবং সিরাজদিখান উপজেলায় অবস্থিত বেদেপল্লীতে গিভ বাংলাদেশ ফাউন্ডেশন একটি জরিপ পরিচালনা করে। জরিপে মাসিক স্বাস্থ্য নিয়ে তাদের মধ্যে সঠিক জ্ঞানের অভাব ও প্রচলিত বিভিন্ন কুঃসংস্কারের বাস্তব চিত্র উঠে আসে। 

নিজেরা সচেতন হওয়ার পাশাপাশি পিছিয়ে পড়া জনগোষ্ঠীকে ক্ষমতায়নের এই যাত্রায় সবসময়ের মত আপনারা আমাদের পাশে থাকবেন– এটাই আমাদের কাম্য।

One of the primary objectives of the ongoing ‘Uncharted Red Waters’ project by the Give Bangladesh Foundation is to ensure menstrual equity for all marginalized women including the Bede community.

These women, who are significantly lagging behind in areas such as education and healthcare, exhibit a concerning lack of awareness regarding menstrual health. Approximately 95% of Bede women have no clear understanding of menstrual hygiene, resulting in their vulnerability to various health issues.

On November 15, the Give Bangladesh Foundation conducted a survey in the Bede settlements located in Sadar, Taltala, and Sirajdikhan Upazilas of Munshiganj district. The survey revealed a significant lack of accurate knowledge about menstrual health as well as the prevalence of various superstitions.
